Bowled over by the prices

Posted @ 2:33 PM

From a SignOnSanDiego reader :

I cannot believe what is happening in my community.

We just went to the Mira Mesa Bowling alley to get the kids out of the house after being trapped in the house for the last two days.

We went there because they have this Monday through Friday deal till 3:00 where you can bowl for $1.00 per person per game and $1.00 shoe rental. Much to my surprise we get there and they have a sign on the door saying the $1.00 deal was not valid today and prices would be $15.00 per hour per lane and $3.00 for shoe rental.

That is absolutely absurd to do to this community in this time of “need”. Especially since 90% of the people there were OBVIOUSLY from the evacuation center located at Mira Mesa High School.

Is there anything that can be done about this? Isn’t this price gauging? Seems like something should be done to this business that is taking advantage of these “victims” who are already in hard times.

Sincerely,
Darla Razzani

In a phone call from SignOnSanDiego, an employee who answered confirmed the $15 per hour fee.

He said it went into effect today. "We get price changes all the time," he said.

When asked if the bowling lane was gouging, he replied, "Yep."

On calling back, manager John Balla said the $15 per hour price is their normal fee. The $1 per hour is a special rate that is not in effect on holidays or when school is out.

Even though school is out because of the wildfires, he said, school is still out.

"Is the movie theater offering a special price?" he asked.

WOW!! I am shocked!!! How can anyone do that with peace in their hearts?? They are completely taking advantage. I surely hope you walked out! I pray God's protection upon you all. :)

That is terrible. What a terrible Management decision.

Its simple - boycott the place and tell your friends to do the same

I heard D.A. Bonnie Dumanis speaking today on the TV. She said it is ILLEGAL to raise the price by more than 10% during times of crisis.

That is absolutely ridiculous! My family and I live down the street and always wanted to visit the bowling alley. Now we never will. I will tell all of our friends about the very un-civically-minded behavior of the bowling alley owners.

How disgusting!

Insane, I am, without any doubt, putting Mira Mesa Bowling on notice. They surely win the big Piece of Sh*t award for Firestorm 2007!

I bowled a 194, best game ever.

That is pretty crappy. Yeah, maybe movies aren't discounted during the crisis, but the prices aren't jacked-up either...

This shows creeps are everywhere. Putting this business out of business is simple. Boycott and hold a sign in front of the business asking everyone to boycott.

Did you walk out or went in to bowl anyway?

UNBELIEVABLE!!! Luckily, this place is a stark contrast to the general compassion and generosity that San Diegans have brought to this crisis.

I hope no one ever bowls there again. What a terrible thing to do to people. I hope this all gets to the owner of the bowling alley and all the people that bowl there on a regular basis.

This is disgusting! At a time when people need some kind of break from all that is going on! Unfortunately, gouging is everywhere. There is a gas station in Vista, where there is NO FIRE DANGER, charging $3.60 a gallon for regular gas - and all around are stations charging $3.07 to $3.11 - What is wrong with people?

Having been to that particular bowling alley before, their behavior and attitude DO NOT surprise me. The owners and managers are really a bunch of jerks. Please boycott this business.

Consumers who believe they have been victimized by price gouging should immediately file a written complaint with the Attorney General's Public Inquiry Unit: www.ag.ca.gov/consumers or by calling (800) 952-5225.

$15 per hour IS the normal price for bowling at the Mira Mesa Bowling alley. School IS out this week. He wasn't lying...maybe he is guilty of trying to not be taken advantage of by the situation. If you want low cost/free childcare, it was provided at certain centers throughout san diego this week, OR right across the street the public library is always free.

The issue is, did the bowling alley take advantage of the tragedy to make more money. If there hadn't been the fire, the price would have been 1 dollar per. Instead, it was 15 dollars. So yes, they took advantage.
